Avis Glaze is truly a world-class leader in education. I first
met Dr Glaze on a visit to Toronto, Canada in 2005, and was immediately struck by her extensive knowledge of effective educational practices and her obvious dedication for the students, teachers and school communities in her jurisdiction.
Since that meeting, Dr Glaze has become a highly respected friend of the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. Together with colleagues in various leadership roles within our organization, I have had the pleasure of maintaining an ongoing dialogue with Dr Glaze about the foundations of high quality public education. Dr Glaze’s authentic leadership over a number of years in relation to literacy and numeracy development and the provision of highest quality public education to all students, especially those from socio-economically disadvantaged and Indigenous backgrounds has proved inspirational to many of my colleagues in New South Wales. I am thrilled to hear of Dr Glaze’s latest venture, The Avis Glaze Letters to Educators. I am sure that Dr Glaze will continue to inspire educators around the world with her personable, practical and passionate insights.”

“Your lifelong commitment to student learning has no parallel. Every effort that I have observed you make has had just one focus: that is to move the student agenda forward with such care and appropriate support. I’ll just cite one example….when the horrible Columbine attack took place your immediate response was to ‘respond’….and character education in the York Region District School Board was born. I’m still in the schools often and there isn’t a visit to any of our schools that does not reflect the importance of good character both visibly and with action. If that was your only legacy that would be sufficient. It hasn’t been, and won’t be. I regard my learning from you related to my own career, and in my life, as most relevant and important. We collectively in York Region are so blessed that you shared your great passion while you were with us in York Region. Others are blessed that you took your efforts beyond our borders”

Conversation with Andrea Bradley
Assistant Secretary of The Scottish Educational Journal
Andrea Bradley (AB): What are your impressions of the current readiness of the Scottish education system to achieve greater equity outcomes for children in school who are living in poverty?
Avis Glaze (AG): Thank you for this opportunity, Andrea. As you know, I’ve worked in many countries and I think that Scotland, more than the majority of places I’ve seen, is ready to provide equity of outcomes for students, regardless of personal, cultural, demographic or economic differences. There is no doubt in my mind of the work that has been done so far leading up to this because this is the third or so time that I’ve been here. The focus, the emphasis, when Mr. Sweeney or Nicola Sturgeon speak, they are passionate about and speak with sincerity about the same goals and the agenda for Scotland. I am convinced they are serious. I think they are ready to go to the next level of implementation that will propel them towards achievement of their goals. There are so many things that I could commend about the system compared to other systems that I have seen. For example, the focus on equity and excellence is a brilliant focus, because the truth is, you never have excellence without equity. They are two sides of the same coin and Scotland gets it, so I’m delighted with that … click here for full interview
