Early in life my first career choice was to become a lawyer. But after meeting a teacher who denounced prejudice and racism and who believed in equity and social justice – causes that were very important to me at the time – I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. I felt strongly that teachers make a significant difference in children’s lives. Most importantly, they influence life chances and contribute to nation building and other important societal outcomes.
It is with pleasure that I share with you some of those moments in this section of the website.

OSCAR PETERSON SCHOOL OF MUSIC
“Dear Dr. Avis,
The 2021-22 academic year was an historic one for The Royal Conservatory School, with the renaming to the Oscar Peterson School of Music in honour of the legendary jazz pianist, beloved alumnus and RCM Honorary Fellow.
In the spring, we announced the new Oscar Peterson Program … the program supports a belief held by Dr. Peterson (and shared by the RCM) that music education should be available to everyone … Your support over the last year has been invaluable as we continue to fulfill our mandate of providing music education for children and adults in our community.
“Once again, on behalf of The Oscar Peterson School of Music, our parents, students and teachers, thank you for your vital support.”
